Islamabad, 22th December, 2017: Senator Sehar Kamran (TI) has welcomed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) vote declaring the US President Donald Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “null and void”. In her message, she said the voting in the UNGA shows that the world has rebuffed the unilateral US decision because it is a serious threat to the global peace and security. She also stated that this vote was a victory for the people and cause of Palestine.
Senator Kamran condemned the threats issued by the US President Trump and Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley to the member countries forcing them to side with the US. She said it is shameful that the legitimacy of the UN is being undermined by the current US leadership, as such statements and intimidation tactics will not only cause irreversible harm to the repute of the international organization, but also damage its sanctity, which is critical to maintain international peace and security as enumerated in Article 1 of the UN Charter.
Senator Sehar Kamran said this vote at the UNGA also reflects that the world is cognizant of the instability the US decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will bring in not only the region but globally. She stressed that the US should reconsider its decision, respect the international law and rescind its decision to move embassy which will only lead to anarchy and chaos.
