Islamabad, 19th January, 2018:Senator Sehar Kamran (TI) has expressed grave concerns over India’s inclusion into the Australia Group. She said this entry highlights the double standards of the international community as they continue to pursue policies based on geopolitical and commercial interests, with complete disregard to international obligations.
Senator Kamran opined that today, deterrence is under tremendous pressure due to shift in India’s military and nuclear strategies, combined with the exponential growth in its conventional and non-conventional capabilities. The recent Agni-V, intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) test by India reinforces this notion that Indian political and military establishment are pursuing reckless and destabilizing strategies in South Asia; which are faulty in their premise and negatively affecting the strategic stability of the region, she added.
Senator Sehar Kamran urged the international community and nuclear watchdogs to take notice of the aggressive statements from Indian defense minister, army and air chief as they are exacerbating the already fragile security environment of the South Asian region and pushing the region toward perpetual instability.
She remarked that it is the responsibility of international community to put pressure on Indian leadership to avoid fueling new nuclear arms race in the region. She stated that despite of all these developments, Pakistan as a responsible nuclear state will continue to peruse credible minimum deterrence without indulging into arms race in the region.
