Islamabad, 5th August, 2016: Senator Sehar Kamran (TI) has voiced serious concerns over the state of Pakistan-US relations as the Pentagon announces the refusal of a payment of $300 million dollars in military reimbursements, citing inadequate action by Pakistan against the Haqqani network. She said the payment of $300 million dollars withheld by the Pentagon is simply but simply the payment of the incurred costs of supporting the US in the counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations over the past two years.
Senator Kamran said steps like these will widen the trust deficit between Pakistan and the United States as particularly relations between the two countries are already fraught with suspicion. She said this decision by the Pentagon is seen by Islamabad as an act of undermining the Pakistani military’s invaluable sacrifices to curb the menace of terrorism and extremism, and a blatant and in recent years recurrent breach of commitment by the United States.
Senator Sehar Kamran further added we need to build bridges between Pakistan and the United States, and this cannot occur unilaterally – both sides must start cooperating and focus on mutual goals of bringing stability and prosperity to this region.
